5 Reel Hooks That Make People Stop Scrolling

By Contentrix · · 4 min read

The first three seconds of a Reel decide whether someone keeps watching or swipes away. That opening moment is called the hook. There is no magic formula, but there are patterns that work again and again. Here are five you can use this week.

1. Show the result first

Start with the finished thing, then show how you got there. A before-and-after, a final design, a plated dish. Viewers stay to find out how it was done.

Example: open on the finished cover grid, then say, "This is how I built this feed in one afternoon."

2. Ask a question your audience already has

A good question makes the viewer think "that is me". It works best when it names a real frustration.

Example: "Why does your Reel get views but no new followers?"

3. Name a common mistake

People pay attention when they might be doing something wrong. Keep it specific and follow it with the fix.

Example: "Stop using a different font on every cover. Do this instead."

4. Promise a clear number

A number tells the viewer how long the value will last and what to expect. Three tips are easier to commit to than a vague "some tips".

Example: "Three things I would change on this profile in five minutes."

5. Interrupt the pattern

An unexpected movement, sound or angle can break the habit of scrolling. Use it to lead into your point, not as a trick with no payoff.

Example: start with a quick zoom or a cut to a surprising object, then say what it has to do with your topic.

A checklist for the first three seconds

  • Put the main idea in words on the screen, not only in speech. Many people watch without sound.
  • Cut out silence, throat clearing and slow introductions.
  • Make sure the hook matches what the Reel delivers. A hook that promises something the video does not deliver loses trust.
  • Keep something moving in the frame during the first second.
  • Test two different hooks on the same content and compare how long people watch.

Keep a hook list

Whenever a Reel makes you stop scrolling, write down its first line. After a few weeks you will have a list of openings that fit your own brand, and starting your next script gets much easier.
